The relationship between Russia and Ukraine has always been strained and problematic. CNN details some background information for this story here:
Russia and Ukraine have been locked in long-simmering conflict since the annexation of the Black Sea peninsula of Crimea by Russia in 2014, and a war with Russian-backed separatists in the country's east has claimed more than 10,000 lives.
Tensions hiked even further in the last few days as Russia accused Ukraine of breaking international law and seized Ukrainian ships and sailors.
The articles I used to put together information for this post include sites CNN, BBC and FOX and are listed below:
The points I'll detail through this article are as follows:
Russia seized 3 Ukrainian ships
24 sailors have been detained (6 injured)
Ukraine has voted to enact martial law
NATO declared that Russia had no justification for its actions
First off, with the basics.
This may have been the second shot heard around the world as it seems everyone heard the events had transpired within hours of the occurrence.
All three sources state in one way or another that Russia has seized 3 Ukrainian ships. Some articles were building on this previously reported fact rather than reporting directly on it, so the wording differs slightly.
Not only were ships taken, but sailors were detained as well. 3 were also injured and hospitalized, as Russia has reported.
Next is something pretty big. Ukraine recently decided to declare martial law. This is intended to be a rare action, and hasn't happened from this conflict since 2014. CNN details this further.
Finally, several entities have expressed their support for Ukraine and condemnation of Russia. One of the most important ones is NATO as two of the articles directly state in the paragraphs below. Not shown is the condemnation by the United Nations, whose say also holds a lot of weight. As BBC didn't report either of those two, it did state the United Kingdom's stance on the matter.
The situation is ongoing and I'm sure we'll hear more. Don't forget to check out the main sources yourself and dive deeper into the story yourself. It should continue to be in the news cycle.
